Support experiences in elder abuse cases
About the research study
This research study aims to investigate the support experiences of people who seek help in elder abuse cases, when they are seeking help on behalf on an abused older adult (60 or older) and do so in a non-professional capacity.
Elder abuse is a "single or repeated act or lack of appropriate action, which occurs within any relationship of trust, and which causes harm or distress to an older person" (WHO, 2018).
There are two options for participating: you can fill out an online survey or you can be interviewed on the phone.

INTERVIEW
Your participation in the study
Your participation in this study is voluntary. You may withdraw your participation at any time for a period of two months after you fill out the survey or after I interview you. You will receive a participant ID (survey) or I will give you a participant number (interview) that will allow me to identify your responses and destroy only your data. After two months, your responses will have already been anonymously integrated with the rest of the participant responses that I have obtained, and thus I will not be able to identify your individual responses to destroy them.

SURVEY
- The estimated time completion of the survey is 30 minutes.
- This survey includes several sections with questions aimed at understanding your experience of seeking support or talking about the experience of mistreatment/abuse of other people. The aim is to understand any barriers to support you may have encountered, as well as anything that may have helped you in accessing support. This will allow me to explore how services and the responses of others can be improved and will hopefully help in improving the support experiences of other people in similar situations.
- This survey asks sensitive questions, so it is advised that you are in a private place when you complete it.
- Your participation in this study is voluntary.
- You may decide not to respond to any question in the survey. You can also take a break and finish completing the survey at a later date. You must continue completing it within a week. If you do not finish completing the survey, the data will not be used.
INTERVIEW
- During the interview, I will ask you questions to understand your experience of seeking support or talking about the experience of mistreatment/abuse of older people.
- My aim is to understand any barriers to support you may have encountered, as well as anything that may have helped you in accessing support. This will allow me to explore how services and the responses of others can be improved and will hopefully help in improving the support experiences of other people in similar situations.
- The estimated duration of the interview is one hour. The interview will be conducted over the phone, but it is important that you are in a private place while the interview takes place, and that you inform me if at any point the situation is no longer private, so that we can arrange a better time to talk.
- I will ask if I can audio-record your answers, so that I can concentrate on what you are saying without having to take notes. You may refuse to allow this, in which case I will write your answers down as you are speaking.
- For you to participate, however, I will need to audio-record your consent to participate in this study. I will briefly ask you to identify yourself either with your name or with a pseudonym and to indicate that you have understood what participating in the study means. I will then turn off the audio recorder if you chose not to have the interview recorded.
- You may decide not to respond to any question I ask you or to stop the interview at any point. You should also tell me if at any given moment you are feeling upset or distressed, so that we can take a break. Please also let me know if you would rather arrange a different time to talk.
